The GCI team joined other companies and individuals who are dedicated to consistent and accurate measurement at the 2018 ASGMT School in Houston.
The ASGMT School brings together experienced oil & gas professionals, manufacturing employees, and students who are entering the field to receive important education and technical training.
It is important for GCI to attend each year because the programs align with our model of providing information and hands-on training in a live setting to ensure a deep level of learning and competency.
What Was Unique About This Year’s ASGMT School?
The oil & gas industry has recovered from the downturn of the early 2010s. Now, employers are responding by ensuring that their employees receive training on their measurement functions.
The result was this year’s ASGMT produced record attendance. We saw a mix of new professionals entering the industry and experienced professionals attending the school to bolster their industry knowledge and see new technology in action.
“Companies are beginning to invest in training again after the downturn,” says GCI president Russel Treat. “These are good leading indicators of where we’re headed.”
Major ASGMT Topic: The New BLM Onshore Order
Another reason for record attendance at the 2018 ASGMT School was companies gathering together to share ideas, lessons learned, and information about the new BLM Onshore Order.
In 2016, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued a new Onshore Order, which includes Rule 43 CFR 3173 that establishes standards “to ensure that oil and gas are properly and securely handled to prevent theft and loss, and to enable accurate measurement and production accountability.”
The BLM has experienced challenges along the way preparing to regulate compliance. At the ASGMT School, companies came together to discuss how the BLM Onshore Order will affect them and share their lessons learned from the early stages of implementation.
Our Takeaway: The Importance of Consistent and Accurate Measurement
The overall takeaway from this year’s ASGMT School is that companies need to focus on developing a consistent, repeatable, and accurate measurement approach to ensure the integrity and reliability of measurements.
The best way to achieve this goal is by training measurement personnel on the fundamentals of measurement, how to use technology and equipment available to them, and how to perform tasks in real-time when out in the field.
GCI helps measurement professionals achieve the confidence to perform measurements consistently and accurately in the field. We would appreciate the opportunity to build on the education and training at ASGMT by providing training to your team.
